About Dim Sum House by Jane G's - University City

Dim Sum House by Jane G's - University City is a chinese restaurant in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is listed at 3939 Chestnut St 2nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA 19104, which places it among the local businesses of Philadelphia that residents and visitors turn to when they need this kind of service close by. Chinese restaurants in the United States range from steam-table lunch counters to white-tablecloth Cantonese seafood halls, and most fall somewhere in between: a laminated menu, a lunch special board, and combo plates priced a few dollars below the dinner menu. Ordering by number off the menu is normal and speeds things up, especially at takeout counters. Family-style ordering, where a table shares several dishes with rice rather than each person getting an individual entree, is standard at sit-down spots and usually cheaper per person. Many neighborhood restaurants are cash-preferred or charge a small card fee, so it is worth asking or checking the door before you order. Delivery apps cover most areas, but calling the restaurant directly is often faster and avoids the markup.

The business lists hours on 2 days of the week. On most of those days it is open 12–10 PM. As with most places, expect changes around holidays; the phone number below is the fastest way to confirm. The listed phone number is (215) 921-5377. Many businesses also reply to text messages on the same number if it is a cell phone. More information is available on its website, dimsum.house.

Customers rate it 4.4 out of 5 on Google across 1,243 reviews, placing it among the better-regarded chinese restaurants in Philadelphia.

Philadelphia is in Pennsylvania, in the Northeast, where four distinct seasons shape local life: hot humid summers, snowy winters that can close businesses for a day, and a dense pattern of towns where walking, transit and street parking all matter. Traffic in Philadelphia peaks on weekday mornings and afternoons, so allow extra time then. Addresses read from the street number up to the city, state abbreviation and five-digit ZIP code; the map link on this page shows the exact spot.

Unless you are craving Chinese food in such a way that is making you really really sad, just don’t. This will make you sadder. The only decent dish was the sautΓ©ed pea sprouts but even those were super salty. I’ve never ever seen deep fried turnip cakes and the sticky Ricky was mostly rice with not a lot of filling. The sautΓ©ed cucumbers was nothing like the picture in the menu nor have I ever had it prepared this way. I know UPenn is far from Chinatown and you maybe tempted to go here. I don’t recommend it. To top it off service was terrible. I guess on the plus side it wasn’t too expensive. Meh.

The food was good, but the serving size was too small for a Chinese place. Beer is great, but it’s Sapporo beer - hard to make it bad. Also a bit noisy inside.

The atmosphere hits that sweet spotβ€”there’s an easy, social hum that makes it perfect for a big table of friends, yet the lighting is gently dim and warm enough that a two-person dinner still feels intimate. Conversations don’t get swallowed by noise; you can hear each other without shouting. Menus can sprawl, but this one has range without chaos: plenty to explore, clearly laid out, and a mocktail section that feels thoughtful rather than sugary. Prices are kind to the wallet given the portion sizes. My must-order lineup starts with the scallion pancakesβ€”the clear headliner. The shrimp lo mein is comfort done right: soft, chewy noodles, well-seared shrimp, and a sauce that coats rather than drowns. And a new favorite is the egg custardβ€”silky and softly set, lightly sweet.

Review – Dim Sum House (Philadelphia) Dim Sum House in Philadelphia is a great Chinese restaurant with a fun and efficient way of ordering: you get a paper menu and a pencil, and simply check off what you want. It’s quick, easy, and perfect for trying multiple dishes without any fuss. The food comes out fast and everything we tried was fresh and flavorful. The eggplant with sauce was delicious, perfectly cooked and full of flavor. The chow fan (fried rice) was solid, and the pork dumplings were excellent β€”juicy, well-seasoned, and definitely the highlight of the meal. Prices are very affordable, especially for the quality and portions, making it a great spot for a casual meal with friends or family. πŸ“ Conclusion: Dim Sum House is a must-visit in Philly if you’re craving authentic Chinese comfort food in a relaxed setting. Great flavors, fast service, and excellent value for money. ⭐ Overall rating: 9/10 πŸ₯Ÿ Best: the pork dumplings and eggplant dish. 🍚 Worst: nothing major to point out. πŸ’Έ Price: cheap and absolutely worth it.

Some of the soup was tasty but salty that day. I don't want to judge the soup on one experience. I totally enjoyed the barbecued spare ribs. A sweet, savory Asian spice mix and tender, fall off of the bone texture. The beef pancakes were another good choice. The soup dumplings and Peking Duck look very delicious. I would go back and try both and more of the special dumplings. The service was excellent, I made a note to myself to mention the waiter and his excellent service.
